About the Project

TurnOut allowed users to discover the best events for their night out, tailored to their preferences.

Having been a long-standing student at the University of Kent, many new students would ask me for suggestions about the nearby nightlife - TurnOut was the solution to this problem.

A survey was given to students to discover how they found out about events and what was most important to them when searching for an event.

The proprietary recommendation algorithm incorporated these findings to provide a personalised event ranking for each user.

Prior to the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica scandal, TurnOut was successfully running in Canterbury for over a year. Facebook has since restricted access to their events API to select partners which has impacted many apps and services which relied on that data. TurnOut is currently on-hold until this issue is resolved.

TurnOut required users to login using their Facebook accounts in order to access the events API. Recommended events were displayed in a ranked list, providing information about the event, its location, opening times, music genres and the attendees. Events up to a week in advance were available. The settings screen allowed users to set their preferred genres and sexual preferences which would contribute to the recommendation algorithm.
